Image bb36-1: Battleship USS Nevada BB36 leading the Attu Invasion force
out of Dutch Harbor Alaska in May 1945. Nevada was the only battleship
to get underway during the Pearl Harbor, and was grounded to avoid sinking
after being hit by 2 torpedoes and 2 bombs. In February 1942 Nevada was
the first battleship at Pearl Harbor was raised and repaired. The ship
was modernized at Puget Sound NSY and participated in the Attu operation
prior to transferring the Atlantic Theater where the ship supported the
D Day landings at Normandy and the August 1944 landings in the South of
France.

Image bb36-2: Battleship USS Nevada BB36 at anchor with the Invasion force
for Okinawa. In November 1944 Nevada was transferred to the Pacific Theater
where the ship supported the landings at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. On 27 March
1945 Nevada was hit by a kamikaze with minimal damage. After the war Nevada
was decommissioned and used as a target for the Atomic Bomb Tests "Operation
Crossroads" at Bikini Atoll. Nevada survived both tests and was sunk as
a target in Jul 1948 off Oahu Hawaii. Nevada was awarded 7 battlestars.

Image claa96: Anti Aircraft Cruiser USS Reno CLAA96 in action with TF38
off Formosa on 13 October 1944. During a three day period in October Reno
shot down six enemy planes. One of the damaged planes crashed onto the
fantail of Reno with minimal damage. On the night of 3 November 1944 Reno
was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-41. Hit aft by a single torpedo
the crew of Reno struggled 16 hours to remain afloat. The damage was finally
contained and the ship towed to Ulithi for temporary repairs. Reno was
completely repaired at the Charleston SC NSY. But saw no further service
and was placed in reserve in 1946 and scrapped in 1962. Reno was awarded
3 battlestars.

Image pf50-1: Patrol Frigate USS Carson City PF50 in action on 3 Nov 1944
while escorting a convoy of 40 PT boats and their 2 tenders off Morotai
Island in the Philippines. Carson City was awarded 2 battle stars.

Image pf50-2: In Jan 1945 Carson City was transferred to the Alaska Sea
Frontier and on 29 Aug 1945 was transferred to the Soviet Union at Cold
Bay Alaska. The ship was returned to the USN at Yokosuka NSY Japan,
where it was immediately decommissioned and transferred the Japanese Self
Defense Force. Renamed Sakura (Cherry Blossom) the ship served until being
decommissioned and scrapped in Japan in 1972. The ship's bell from Carson
City is on display at the Carson City City Hall.
